TOEFL – The Test of English as a Foreign Language

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test used to evaluate the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. It is widely accepted by universities, colleges, and institutions in English-speaking countries as proof of English proficiency for academic purposes. TOEFL is primarily used by individuals applying to universities and colleges where English is the language of instruction. It assesses the language skills needed for academic success, including reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
- Reading Section: Test takers read academic passages and answer questions to demonstrate comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills.
- Listening Section: Test takers listen to lectures, conversations, and discussions and answer questions based on the audio content.
- Speaking Section: Test takers express their opinions, respond to prompts, and participate in speaking tasks to demonstrate speaking fluency, pronunciation, and coherence.
- Writing Section: Test takers write essays and responses to prompts, showcasing their ability to organize ideas, support arguments, and use appropriate language.
Types of TOEFL
- TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test): The most common version of TOEFL, administered via the internet. It includes all four sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing.
- TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test): Offered in areas where internet-based testing is not available. It includes the Reading, Listening, and Writing sections but has a different format for the Speaking section.
SCORES
- Each section of TOEFL is scored separately on a scale of 0 to 30. The total score is the sum of the scores from all four sections, with a maximum total score of 120 for TOEFL iBT.
- TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date. After this period, they are considered expired, and candidates may need to retake the test if their scores are no longer valid.
